Kobra And The Lotus are a heavy metal band coming out of Canada. Focused around front woman Kobra Paige, the band produces powerful metallic anthems that cross genre boundaries into the power metal realms.

This year the band put out a new album entitled "Prevail I" which is by far their best effort to date. The heavy riffage mixing perfectly with Kobra's amazing voice. She lends power and authenticity to the moving lyrics, and hits just the right chemistry to instantly cement these songs into your brain.

Joining Kobra on stage is Jasio Kulakowski on lead guitar, Brad Kennedy on bass guitar, Lord Marcus Lee on drums, and they had an additional touring guitarist on stage that is not listed on their website or album artwork.

They opened the set with "Gotham" which also opens the latest release. It is an amazing song that sold me on the album from the first words: "Where is your god?"

They followed up with the first single that came out prior to the full album, "Trigger Pulse". The intricate guitar work on the album as a whole combines heavy riffs with uplifting melodic pieces, both driving and somehow soothing at the same time.

"Specimen X (Mortal Chamber)" is a standout on the new release. When Kobra cries out "Can you hear me? Can you hear me calling? I'm locked behind these walls and can't get out" you can feel her torment but also her strength.

It reminds us that we are all trapped in this mortal shell (prison cell) and the need to interact with others on a higher level. It also brings to mind the plight of those dealing with mental illness or depression and their sense of isolation from the world at large.

Kobra thanked the audience for their energy and exuberance. She said they were proud to be supporting the latest album but were also going to play a few of their songs from previous releases which lead into "Hold On" from 2014's "High Priestess" release.

They followed that up with "Soldier" from that same release which was very date appropriate as they were playing Los Angeles on Memorial Day.

Returning to "Prevail I" they did the bombastic "Hell On Earth". Continuing with new material they did their second single for the latest album with "You Don't Know".

While this song starts as a ballad, i.e., a bit slow for a Kobra And The Lotus song, it quickly rises like the band's name sake and strikes with a poignant message about actually being present and non-judgemental, two things that have steadily declined with the current state of social exchange.

They concluded their set with the fan favorite, "50 Shades of Evil" from their self-titled album which got the circle pit going with a renewed intensity.

It was as great set and Kobra is an amazing vocalist with a striking stage presence. The band as a whole seemed to be enjoying their time on the stage and reacting to the fans feeding off of their energy.

The new album is fantastic and I cannot recommend it high enough. This was only part one of a two album set so I cannot wait for "Prevail II" to drop later this year!

As a last note, I just have to give a shout out to Kamelot as it was seeing Kobra Paige on stage with them during their last tour that led me to find out about Kobra And The Lotus in the first place and I am grateful.
