Moonspell

review by Travis Baumann

Moonspell was first intro-duced to us by a really cool couple we met while visiting London.

I had not been a huge metal fan but Moonspell was different. They had a mysterious Occultic/Gothic vibe mixed with exceptional song writing and lyrics.

Moonspell come to us from Portugal so when I heard they were touring US for the newest album "Darkness and Hope" I was very excited to see them. "Darkness and Hope" is personally my favorite album of theirs with just the write mix of melodic hope with the harsh darkness.

Moonspell were slated to play a small venue I had not been in, known as the Fei a Do Do with Label-mates, Italian dark-rockers Lacuna Coil.

The venue was packed to capacity on this night four eve's before that fated night in December.

Moonspell took the stage to a great reaction from the crowd. Fernando wore a long leather duster with a brimmed matching hat. The first song of the set was "The Serpent in My Hands", one of my favorties off the new album and it was fantastic live with an intense energy and power.

The lighting in the club was low and ominous, in the warm tones of fire. Fernando stripped off his coat and hat for "Devil Red" revealing a long Asian style robe of red.

Fernando looked sinster in the dark ambiance as he conjured each song. After two songs from the new album they switched gears to "Opium" off Irreligious, another one of my favorite albums and songs.

Without a moment's rest they went straight into "Butterfly Effect" off their second to latest CD. The live version of this one was unbelievably powerful.
