Night Club are a Los Angeles based duo that writes and performs electronic dance music with a mixture of harsher industrial style synths and drum beats and melodic female vocals.

They have been cited as industrial pop and synth pop and while vocalist Emily Kavanaugh has a voice reminiscent of modern pop divas, the subject matter of her lyrics combined with Mark Brooks' stabbing synths push it into darker and deeper waters.

I am fairly new to the band so I have only gotten familiar with their full length release, "Requiem for Romance" which came out last year. Night Club have been touring extensively this year and are currently opening for seminal electronic artists, Lords of Acid.

Live, Emily dances and moves about the stage with an impressive energy while delivering her vocals flawlessly, definitely no lip-syncing like the aforementioned pop icons.  Mark is busy behind keyboards and a laptop but this juxtaposes well with Emily's activity.

On this evening their set list consisted of songs predominantly from the latest album including "Show It 2 Me", "Pray", and "Freak Like Me".

Two of their bigger hits were fan favorites with "Dear Enemy" and "Bad Girl" both of which exemplify the Night Club sound perfectly: dirty synths, stabbing base lines, dance-able beats and Emily's attractive voice.

These songs also exemplify Emily's penchant for dark and edgy subject matter. One song tells of betrayal and subsequently becoming the subject's enemy. The other song revels in being "bad" and living life without inhibition.

This was my first time getting to see them live and I thought it was a great performance. I enjoyed Emily's on stage energy and the songs are definitely catchy, sticking in your head like pop songs but with much better music and meaning behind them. I look forward to seeing them again.
